DIY: Decorative Letter

I’m super E-xcited and E-cstatic to finally share this with you (haha, get it?)! I put this little project together for one of my best friends Emily when I was her secret santa! It took maybe all of an hour total to make (not counting drying time), and all the materials were under $10! I know, right? Whether you’re making it for a friend or yourself, trust me; this easy-to-make project is too good to pass up.

There isn’t all too much to explain, but I do have a few tips that I think are worth sharing, so I’ll intersperse those throughout the instructions! (:

MATERIALS

  • Wooden letters
  • Acrylic paint
  • Wooden bow (from Michael’s a LONG time ago!)
  • Hot glue gun
  • Paintbrushes, markers, other painting utensils

That’s it, that’s all you need! You can generally get these materials at other stores than Target, but these were all very cheap and accessible for me, and maybe there are for you too!

THE PROCESS

  1. Paint the letter of your choice with whatever paint you picked up. I chose yellow because that’s Emily favorite color (and it matches her personality, she’s just so fun and bubbly!) Be careful to not get the paint too thick, it will look gloppy in the end result and make the whole process take longer!
  2. Paint on a second coat, or if you’re like me, paint the back and the sides you couldn’t paint from the front! You don’t have to paint the entire letter, but if you do, just be 100% sure that the front is dry! Afterwards, paint on a second coat of paint or until you’re happy with the result.
  3. On to the dots! Now you don’t have to add polka dots; you could add stripes, a decorative pattern, any text, or perhaps nothing! It’s whatever you choose! If you do decide to paint on polka dots, I suggest using the end of an old Crayola marker! The dots aren’t completely smooth with this technique, but I kind of like the extra texture it adds from picking the marker back up from the letter! You can see a close up of the polka dots in the picture below.
  4. While waiting for the letter to dry, I began painting the bow with the some process, front and back with two coats.
  5. Once EVERYTHING is dry, warm up the hot glue gun and place your decorative item wherever you want it on your letter! Make sure to press and hold it there or put a big book on top to ensure that the glue will stick!
  6. Voilà, you’re done! You can always add more or less, depending on your taste, but this should be a basic list of instructions to get you started!

It’s that easy! Feel free to make any modifications to this DIY project if you feel so inclined, too! Whether you make this for a friend as a quick but meaningful gift, or for yourself as home decor, I guarantee this won’t go to waste! Maybe I’ll pick up some more paint and a “K” for myself in the next few weeks? (:

Rainy Lunch Date w/ the Girls

Woah, woah, woah, is this the first post of 2017? And it’s already February 1?? That’s waaaaay too long. Ever since my last blog post, when finals mode kicked in, my busy life has been going non-stop since then, and it still is! I’m completely exhausted- but I’m not complaining! Yes, I’ve been driving from one place to another and hardly spending any time by myself, but mostly because I’ve been given SO many amazing opportunities to fill my schedule with! Whether it be the All-District choir concert, or just hanging out with my girls, I’ve been having a blast doing so many things I love. What I HAVEN’T been doing (and I HAVE been missing so incredibly much) is blogging! What the heck, Katherine?! Not to fear, I’m back and hoping to really keep my blog going, despite the chaos that is everyday life. So to ring in the new year (a little late, but better than never), I’ve decided to start with a fashion post from our girls’ lunch date, with a few added pictures of my friends ’cause they’re just too cute to not include. (;

It’s Fall, Y’ALL!!!

Seriously, what’s not to love about fall? The leaves on the ground are varying shades of red,  yellow, and orange, the temperature cools down just enough but not too much, the best Starbucks seasonal drinks start coming out, and the fashion only gets cuter! So to be in spirit of the season, why not write about one of my favorite and most simple fall outfit that works for nearly any occasion? I actually highly suggest you take your own spin on this look and make it your own, because it’s so easy to recreate and change up (brown boots for black, striped shirt for white, etc.). The possibilities are absolutely endless! Yay for fall and new and cozy outfits! Enjoy! (:

“And since I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you ought to wash each other’s feet.”

John 13:14 NLT

This might be one of my absolute favorite bible verses because of the true message behind it: do what has been done to you, to put it in simple terms. If you’re wanting kindness and respect from your peers or anyone else in your life, show them kindness and respect- lead by example, for that’s exactly what Jesus did.

Another way to look at the verse is to take away this: no one is more important than the other in any situation, whether it be in a job title, talent, intelligence, you name it. We are all equal and all expected to follow the same rules. I recognize that many of us probably already know this and get the idea, but it’s always good to refresh your brain on how to treat those around you. Never act like you’re higher than anyone else, and never put up with someone doing that very same action to you.

No matter which way you choose to interpret the verse, you can most definitely take away a good message from it to apply to your daily attitude. I challenge you to think in this very mindset throughout everything you do. I encourage you to not only recognize the Lord as your great and holy God, praise him, and spread the word of Jesus Christ, but to live your life through Jesus Christ as well. Isn’t that our task as Christians? To live by the words and actions of Jesus?

It’s amazing what you can do by showing a little compassion in every word, action, and thought throughout your day. I guarantee that you will notice a difference, and your peers around you will, too. So get out there into the world and start “washing some feet”! (;

Trend Obsession: Lace Trimmed Sweaters

Boy, it sure is getting colder and colder here in Missouri! Wow, I was not made for this weather. Oh well, at least cute boots and sweaters can somewhat make up for it! Right now I’m currently going nuts over dresses and sweaters with lace trims at the bottom- they are absolutely adorable! I don’t know what it is, I guess the lace just adds that extra “pizzazz” to the ensemble, you know? (:

Making Time: For God & The Things You Love

Holy cow, it’s been a long time since I’ve been on here! I swear, there is never a busier time of the month than fall, with all your classes kicking into gear, clubs/activities starting up, and anything else time consuming you can imagine. Ask any of my friends or family and they’d tell you that I really haven’t had ANY free time, unless you count sleeping or eating. I’ve honestly been so upset about not having the time to sit down and write a blog post with everything that’s going on, but then it hit me- DUH! You have to make time if there isn’t time already! Of course, that sounds like the typical answer you get but can never actually achieve or follow through on, but here me out.

Black Friday: Deals You Won’t Want to Miss

If you can’t tell from my plethora of fashion related blog posts and how excited I get at when I’ve bought something on sale, I LOVE BARGAINS. So naturally, Black Friday is probably one of my favorite times of the year (and also one of the most dangerous times as well, my wallet takes a huge hit). Don’t get me wrong, I’m not one of those people that goes and waits in a line on Thanksgiving night just to get the thing I want- I wouldn’t want to sacrifice family time for something that small. However, I will so take up any chance I can to go shopping without sacrificing anything major, except for my money of course. (: So to help all you crazy people like me who are obsessed with shopping as well, I’ve created a list of my favorite deals this Black Friday that you definitely won’t want to miss.

Giving Thanks

This probably has to be my absolute favorite time of the year. People always laugh when I tell them that because they always say, “But Katherine, you can’t even eat the turkey,” (I’m vegetarian for clarification), “that’s the best part!” I simply just laugh, too, because that’s definitely not the best part. For some reason, it seems like as your tummies get bigger, your hearts do too. Haha, or maybe it’s just because it’s Thanksgiving and everyone of all ages and backgrounds is realizing just how thankful they should be. So in spirit of the season, I’ll be sharing some of my major reasons (not in any order) to be thankful, and maybe you can add some of these to your list, too! (:

Woah, there, what’s happened? It’s been like what, two months almost since I’ve been on here? That’s waaaaaay too long. Seriously, I’m so sorry you guys, life’s been getting crazy and honestly I just haven’t even had time to think about blogging. But I’m going to try and make it a personal goal of mine to at least blog some of my favorite quotes or bible verses when short on time, and try to get some more real stuff out as well. But as for this post, how about a little status update on my life to fill all of y’all in?
